[Xastir] Shapefile question/help

I have my MacOS based Xastir system running nicely now on the shape file
maps but have one annoying problem/question.

When the maps load I get a large amount of little red X's all over the
screen.

What are they and what can I do to eliminate them?

Also in the list of shape files loading, is the ones I can remove to speed
up the loading? 

Just trying to remove or disable the "fluff" in the system.
