I've not previously encountered build-dep but after googling I find it 
is invoked as apt-get build-dep <packagename>, as you have said. This 
leads me to believe it would only be of use with <packagename> source 
from the repository. I can't see how it would help with sources from 
elsewhere, or am I missing something?

I'm always ready to learn something new.
