[Xastir] Would this program help for map conversion?

i have question, i have been using maps that i downloaded from the internet (granted they are 2008 maps) but seem to be working good for xastir. why are people trying to migrate from them? they are what i think are open source and i dowloaded all of the us maps that was online. is there new features or something wrong with older maps? i run my xastir on tablet and use it for digi/igate
