Maps won't display?

OK, here's 'da scoop.  SuSE 9.0 box.  No Xastir.  Upgrade to SuSE 9.1.  After
the usual dance with ImageMagick dependencies Xastir finds ImageMagick and
compiles.  Life is good, right?  WRONG!  Everything works fine except the
maps (None of them, online, offline or otherwise.) display on the terminal.
There's lots of grinding and mashing on the harddrive but after about 15
seconds it just goes back to plotting stations on a blank map.

Thoughts?
