And if you do work out how to make macports apply a patch for you before
it tries to build, this is the patch it should apply:

Cut and paste the lines between the "SNIP" lines into a file, and see if
you can make heads or tails out of this page:

for how to apply it properly so that Macports uses it.  I believe the section
that is applicable is section 4.5.2.

I'm sorry I can't help you more on this.  Perhaps someone else on the list
is more familiar with macports than I am and can give more explicit guidance.
