Yes, you need to update your fork before you push stuff to its master
branch.  You shouldn't push anything to its master branch, actually.

I've snagged that one change and pushed it to master on the main fork.

But since you pushed to your fork's master and hadn't updated first, 
your fork is now out of sync with the main repo.  You'll need to clean that 
up before you pull, and certainly before you do any more work.  

Just do a "git reset --hard 767104cb" to get back
to where you left off, force push to your fork (TO YOUR FORK!), and then
re-sync to master, which has your change on it as of now.

If you're gonna work out of a fork, you need to keep the master branch 
pristine and work in feature/topic branches.  Working in master on a fork
is the way to make a mess.
