I am running Slackware 8.1 systems and I had segfaults with reading
geotiffs until I recompiled. Here is my system changelog:
2002-07-03 Olivier Calle <olivier at calle.org>
Rebuilt libgeotiff pointing to private includes from built libtiff
because it was segfaulting. Hand installed .a and .so only.

Versions involved:
libtiff-3.5.7-i386-2
libgeotiff-1.1.4-i386-1

If I recall, I grabbed the libtiff source that the Slackware package was
built from, rebuilt it with the same flags and left in alone (i.e.: didn't
reinstall...)
I then grabbed the libgeotiff source that the Slackware package used and
rebuilt it with the same flags, except that I added this to configure:
--with-libtiff=../tiff-v3.5.7/libtiff

I then copied over the .a and .so for libgeotiff and things worked.

I honestly can't remember why I tried this. Maybe a google search
helped...
