I'd have given more context if I had it.  I don't actually have a
Linux system for testing.  That variable does look like the right one,
though, since it's the same as FreeBSD's.  I found out all of this by
looking at the man page for malloc.

Neither had I, but FreeBSD 5.1-CURRENT has it set by default.
