This is on of the reasons why I was looking for a microcontroller based 
approach. There are so many things that can go wrong in the setup with 
general purpose computers, not to mention the hardware tends to be 
unreliable if it has moving parts. A Knoppix or similar live-cd 
installable and/or usb-bootable/configurable system would indeed go a 
long way in easing the setup phase.
