[Xastir] Maps wont display

Xastir seem to support MAP, GEO, PDB, GNIS, TIF and SHP. If I download 
or convert to one of these types, the files will be available in the map chooser. 
But as far as I understand could Xastir make use of other formats (like gif) by 
using ImageMagick to convert. Is this compiled into the Debian package?
