The 386SX had 16 bit memory interface so it needed 2 (8-bit) memory
chips per bank. The 386DX had 32 bit memory and needed 4 chips.

The 386SX is a 32-bit processor like the 386DX, but with a 16-bit memory
I/O interface. It runs linux fine.
