apt-get install ppp pppconfig

Then run pppconfig and answer the questions.  It can configure ppp for
dial-on-demand operation.  I think I changed the timeouts which were
pretty short (I have used DSL for the past 3 years and don't remember
the details all that well).

I understand that wvdial will do this also, but I haven't used it.
