[Xastir] shape files still don't work

Curt:
I removed all libs and such from my system as well as the xastir stuff and 
then reinstalled from scratch. 
I removed and reinstalled:
libtiff
lesstif
lesstif-devel
ImageMagick
libgeotiff
shapelib
libproj
Openmotiff
all installs had NO failures.
made sure ld.co.conf pointed ldconf to all the libs and run it multiple times 
with several sync's afterward.
removed all traces of xastir from my computer.
downloaded xastir cvs again
ran bootstrap and configure, again with no failures
configure says the following:

still NO shape file shows up although the directories they are in do show up
permissions are set to 755 for dir & 644 for files
xastir is set suid and runs, but not good,

what I mean is that often while moving the mouse to change something in a 
window, like drag across, for new zoom level etc. the program hangs on the 
command but continues to run otherwise.  Many times setting the debug level 
results in a locked debug window.  ocassionally trying to use the right mouse
button results in no control window. occassionaly using the left button 
results in the arrow cursor changing direction and getting a little bigger 
but no action results from a drag.  Modifier button is off.

So I do not know what to make of it all,,, 
worst problem is no shapefile support.
Using mandrake9.1 on intel cpu 650 mhz with 512 meg ram, xfce4 window manager.

Any and all sugesstions would be appreciated,
