your impression is correct.
on my own machines i install software from source in /usr/local, in
subdirectories called depots, and use a tool call "depot" to merge them
into a common tree. so /usr/local/bin/xastir is actually a symlink to
/usr/local/depot/xastir.001/bin/xastir

if i want to deinstall xastir, i'd just remove /usr/local/depot/xastir.001
completely, and be done.
