I have a couple more data points now...

The message I'm getting when xastir starts up and baulks at the 
TIGERMAP_INTENSITY is:

Found out-of-range or non-existent value (100) for TIGERMAP_INTENSITY in 
config file, changing to 100

My config file, however, has

USE_TIGERMAPS:1
TIGERMAP_INTENSITY:50
TIGERMAP_TIMEOUT:30

On the hang issue, it appears that things hang up after my TNC 
transmits.  If I disable my TNC from transmitting, then it doesn't 
appear to hang up.  It's only been up for a couple of hours now, but 
this is a longer stretch than it's stayed up for the past couple of days.
