I have no idea how this discussion started, but my two cents

If you are talking about SCUBA diving then you are required, in most open 
water, to tow a flag anyhow.

Nifty idea. I'll float my Etrex on the bouy and then run the power and serial 
down to an LCD display / PIC that I could pot in optical grade epoxy.

I'm going diving this weekend and plan to take my GPS with me. It's an etrex 
which is supposedly waterproof, but I still intend to put it in a translucent 
top Pelican case.
