[Xastir] Preserving stable release on my system

Would it be possible to simply cp the xastir binary to xastir.stable?

Assuming I keep (at minimum) my existing libaries, can I continue to
compile and run CVS, and run xastir.stable at the same time?  Would
there be other conflicts, like in the configuration files?  I'd probably
need 2 users, one to run .stable, and my normal user running CVS.
