Following links in email from Kurt's (Kurt A.F. Kiesow III, thanks Kurt), I found my way to www.aprs-is.net which answered a lot of my questions.

For now.. I'll stay connected to the regional (aprswest) server.

Are you saying that hams disagree on how to set something up? I cannot imagine that ;-)
