Curt, is this part of the way to get what i was
asking about a few days ago, namely, "Enable PNG
snapshots" and then use the ~/.xastir/tmp/
something.xpm file?

Are you saying that the latest CVS will automatically
create the .geo file needed to go with the .xpm
file?

You write, in part:

That's what i want to do, cache online tigermaps and
use them later, because downloading layers of
hundreds of shapefiles is getting to be too tedious.

So should i wait a while yet, because the code 
hasn't yet been "extended to cache online maps"?
