Also running XP Home here on a Toshiba laptop.
As i stated, Cygwin and Xastir had no problem
with the space in "Orrin Winton" -- but i haven't
got a clue about solving the problem for someone
who didn't have the problem.  

Except Curt's suggestion:  to create a new user
in Windows (a username with no embedded space), 
log in as that user, and use that to install
Cygwin.

When i tried to compile & install KDE under cygwin
(Curt's advice was don't try, it'll run REALLY 
slow), it wouldn't work, and the embedded space
was part of the problem.  

Make sure you have the latest cvs update of
cygwin.  One time i got errors in the configure
and make stages, and the errors went away when i
updated my cvs Cygwin.
