Arrgh.  

I hope it isn't the case that cygwin saves the userid of the user that 
installed it.  I doubt that, and will go boot up my kid's windows machine
to see if I can find any sign of that (I installed cygwin there under my
own userid, and will check that if I log in under the kid's ID that it shows
her userid and not mine).  If not, then perhaps there is something in the
registry that is confusing the issue (I once had an installation of 
"gEDA and friends" (a schematic capture/electronic CAD suite that also
runs under Cygwin) do something like that, creating a "HOME" registry entry 
that interfered with the HOME variable that cygwin uses to pick your home 
directory)).
