minicom is a standard 'issue' with most distros. Give a 'man mincom' 
command at a command prompt - chances are you'll be treated to the manual.

Shortcut, as root (or sudo) 'minicom -s'

That'll put you in 'configure mode' - setup wich ttySx you're using, 
bits, rates, etc.
