[Xastir] topo maps

While we're asking questions...

How/where does one download topo maps?  I thought I had read something a
while ago that explained a procedure where one got the map through xastir,
took a screen shot, and then used the file as a map file?  Does that sound
right?

I looked for the posting but was unable to find it - if someone could
explain the easiest way to download topo maps I'd appreciate it.
