Best method (in my opinion) is to run AX.25 kernel networking, with
the TNC in KISS mode.  This gives you the ability to use the TNC for
more than just APRS, or to share it between multiple APRS programs.
It also gives you the capability to use multi-port TNC's, soundcard
modems, 8530 cards, Baypac (parallel interface) TNC's, etc.
Whatever Linux will support.

Next best would be serial KISS mode.  Next would be serial text
mode.

Any of them can be made to work.
