If you logged in as a normal user and it's not allowing you to use
the display, perhaps your DISPLAY environment variable didn't get
set, or is set to the wrong value.

    echo $DISPLAY

It should probably be set to ":0.0" or "localhost:0.0"

If not, type this in the xterm you're starting Xastir from:

    export DISPLAY="localhost:0.0"
