[Xastir] newbie help needed for using xastir under linux with soundmodem

I'm trying to get set up to use xastir on a linux box with a soundmodem. I've got the kernel built(AX25), and the soundmodem (usermode) sees packets just fine. But now I'm lost.

What do I need to do to use the sm0 interface with xastir? Do I need to layer some sort of kiss driver on top of sm0?

Any and all help would be appreciated.
