[Xastir] "The National Map" maps?

Has anyone ever tried to download maps from "The National Map" viewer
http://nationalmap.usgs.gov/nmjump.html and use them in Xastir? I've
downloaded some maps from here in geotiff format but I don't seem to be able
to load them in Xastir. When I try to load the map I get the following
message on the console.

*** geoTIFF file /usr/local/share/xastir/maps/90042090/90042090.TIF is not
in the proper format.

*** Please reformat it and try again.

I didn't know what to do so I tried resaving the file with GIMP then
inserting the geodata by using geotifcp and the data I exported before
saving with GIMP, but it still does the same thing. Any ideas what I need to
do? I've pasted the results of listgeo and tiffinfo below in case that
helps.
