That would be fairly easy to do if I'm not mistaken....I've not gotten
into the Xastir source but I'm thinking about trying....I'm completly
self taught and not very far along :-)

I can understand that completly and feel the same way normally. I have
found there are deficiencies in the D7 that I've not been able to work
around. I'm new to this, but so far the D7 does seem to be the easiest
way to get APRS integrated with SAR and Xastir IMHO is the best solution
on the mapping side for integration.

I've got a Garmin Rhino which is the same as the etrex units on the GPS
side if I'm not mistaken. I will find the cable for it and give that a
shot and reply with my results.

The D7 has a number of options in it for sending waypoints to GPS. There
are a few as I understand it for normal NMEA which will allow up to 9
characters from the callsign. In addition there is a special "6digit
MGN" option which makes it work with Magellan GPS units, the standard
NMEA options will not work.
