[Xastir] use D700 TNC for xastir and built-in APRS?

I connected my laptop to the d700 this morning, fired up kermit, and
issued the AI 1 command. There was a status line for almost anything I
did on the control head, and these lines appear to be from updating the
700's built-in APRS app:

LIST 01,KG4OOL,0622,0851,:,3444390,08639741,/,>, ,04,000000000000,On
the road to somewhere :^},110000------

I'm going to guess that the fields are
call,date,time,?,lat,long,?,?,?,?,?,status,?

Is this some standard format, or would I have to preprocess them to
make them look like regular APRS packets before I feed them to xastir?

I expected to see something like the data that scrolls across the
display when I hit "pmon", but it didn't happen.

Does xastir have to talk to the TNC? If I make an empty startup file
(or one that just contains "AI 1") and disable all transmitting does
xastir still talk to the TNC?

Something I didn't try (because it just occurred to me) was to try and
put the 700 in packet mode (as opposed to APRS mode) and try issuing a
command that looks like this "LIST" entry above. Of course, then I'd
have to figure out how to get that data from xastir and back into the
700.

Another way to accomplish this would be to simply use a sound card type
decode on the audio output from the APRS side of the 700.
Unfortunately, I haven't seen that for the Mac.

thanks,
