Since it looks like I will need the other drive, what do you recommend 
I put on the flash?  First though is of course /boot.  Anything else 
make sense?

This sounds good.  I also use FVWM2 on my old laptop and on my remote 
controlled machines.  Much less overhead than KDE or Gnome.
