That's pretty close to what I do here.

aprsd
serial TNC
xastir

All on the same box.

Xastir connects to local aprsd only (it's also open to the public -
aprsdcsp.kc7zru.net).

aprsd handles I-gate and server functions - including gating of
NWS/alert info to RF.

TNC is a KCP3+ wV8.2 - it handles the digipeating stuff internaly. Since
my loation is as a 'lower', home station - all generic calls are
supported (R,W,Wn,T), but the slot time is coordinated between this
system and the big 'WIDE' up on Casper Mnt so Casper Mnt always get's
first 'go' at what's heard. If my station hears it and Casper Mnt. don't
- - well, it will when my station digis it out.

Drawbacks? Xastir only has one port and can't tell what's 'local' by
what port info arrives on. Mmm, feature request time!! Setup 'local'
definition by user adjustable range rather than port.

Someday, I'll grow up and be a real linux hack and install the kernel
AX.25 stuff, pull the KPC3+, use it for a tracker and instead put one of
these older MFJ-1270Bs in KISS mode in place. Been saying that for nigh
on to 4 years now ::sigh::
