[Xastir] Cannot load map

 From an xterm window, type "display filename" against the map
filename.  For instance "display map.gif" to see if you get an
image.

That sounds like a "locale" problem.  Try setting "LANG=en_US" or
"LANG=C" before starting Xastir.

    export LANG="en_US";xastir &
