[Xastir] Adding offline maps?

GDAL was able to read the mapinfo files directly, but limited data is 
displayed and it is really sloooooooooow.  What takes about 7 secs with a 
shapefile of a given small (range scale of 400 meters) area takes about 15 
minutes with gdal.  Streets and topo contours show up but that is it.
I know very little about this complex map stuff, so I'll just leave it for a 
while.  I guess dbfawk doesn't work with this format does it?
