Not a total loss eh? Never thought about it in that light before.

I recompile Xastir constantly, but then again I'm fixing bugs,
adding new features, testing it against various combinations of
libraries, upgrading libraries. Being able to recompile from
sources is a major advantage, not a handicap. ;-)

If you don't like something, you tweak the sources, recompile, and
it's changed. If you want to use a new map type that you don't have
support for, you add the library, reconfigure/recompile Xastir, and
you have it. Where's the downside? Oh yea, and you learn things as
you go, again and advantage. It'll be an advantage when you get to
the next open-source application that is configured/compiled in the
same exact manner. And the next. And the next.

With regards to getting AX.25 stuff running, refer to the AX.25
HOWTO document. Remaining questions should probably go to the
"linux-hams" mailing list. We really don't cover that stuff here,
although if you're close to running you might ask a question or two
here after reading the docs and trying to get it configured
yourself. Sometimes it is very advantageous to get sample setups
from someone with a working system.

Once you have AX.25 networking going with your BayPac modem, with
the "listen" command showing you packets, you can
reconfigure/compile/install Xastir again and then use the AX.25
networking port. It's very easy.
