You don't have Disable All Maps clicked do you? You decompressed
the NOAA shapefiles and put them into the
/usr/local/share/xastir/Counties directory, right?

You might try copying the files into your maps directory (or
symlinking to them), re-index, then test whether the maps are
viewable in Xastir. I often use the county shapefile as a map so I
keep symlinks from my maps directory to the Counties directory.

To answer a question you asked earlier, Xastir should redraw the
weather alerts when any changes happens to an alert, like a new one
arriving or one expiring. Of course zooming/panning will get a
redraw done as well. It might draw them even more often than that.

I'm wondering if some of the map indexing tweaks might have messed
up weather alerts. They're working for me, but I should check
everything from scratch by wiping out one of my user's configs, then
seeing if everything gets rebuilt/re-indexed properly.

For testing wx alerts, you can capture a few active alerts via your
log files, then create a separate log file by hand with just a few
alerts in it. Suck those into Xastir and you should instantly or
very quickly see the alerts pop up on your screen. That's how I do
my testing with wx alerts. I often have to tweak the expire day so
that the alert remains active, but other than that it works well.
