I'm a shapefiles fan.  I've got several National atlas files for low 
resolution nationwide coverage, and the TIGER shapefiles for a few 
states for more detailed coverage.  I'm also working on SDTS converted 
to shapefile for contours.

I expect I'll need to find a distribution I can modify so that I can 
install my maps and configure xastir.
