Clarke's musings on artificial satellites, including his book "Venus
Equilateral" were credited with paving the way toward communications
satellites. He provided enough solid physics in his prose to allow
others to see the way toward their achievement. That we never had to
place human tenders onboard the communications satellites was more a
function of miniturization and the transistor than an error in his logic.
Oh... and he references the ARRL Handbook in "Venus Equilateral", too...
