As another point to consider, with the latest CVS and 1h 18m 50s of
runtime, I get 19:22.50 from top, which eqates to 25.6% CPU.

That's much higher than the long-running Xastir is showing.  It's
possible that either the latest sources are slower at processing.

More profiling is in order.  I'll be off for the next few days so
perhaps I'll tackle some of this again.  I did this a while back and
stopped before I got too far into profiling the map routines.  I had
always wanted to get back to it.  Yea, I know... sick puppy.
