It certainly sounds like colormap issues on the X11 server where
you're doing your display.  Are you by any chance running a web
browser that likes to steal all your colors?  Perhaps something like
Gimp or XV that might do the same?  I used to have that sort of
problem on an 8-bit display when I started Netscape up first.  If I
limited Netscape to a smaller number of colors I was fine.
