[Xastir] Draw on maps ?

Can someone explain how to use the draw CAD objects?

I can get a nice little pencil cursor, but all it allows me to do is zoom in 
on a map.

It appears to work exactly like the regular cursor, but it looks like a 
pencil.

I'm also trying to get the area objects to work. I can set the offset (which 
would seem to be better labeled width/height), but when I return to the 
dialog box (modify object) the information I entered into the offset boxes 
is modified from what I entered.

I'm still running Cygwin.
