[Xastir] Shapefile 1.2.10 install

Anyone have some suggestions on how to install
Shapefile 1.2.10? I downloaded the tarball and
extracted it. The README file is this:

Please read shapelib.html.

Building on Unix
----------------

1) Edit Makefile, and set CFLAGS, and CC macros as
required for the
   target system.  Often the defaults will work fine.

2) "type make" 

The result should be:

Core shapelib support.  
  shpopen.o
  dbfopen.o

Utility/demonstration programs:
  shpcreate, shpdump, shpadd, dbfcreate, dbfdump,
dbfadd

To test type:
  make test



I typed "make" and went with the defaults. It seems to
compile in the original directory. Now, how do I get
Xastir to find it????
