Have you installed any map files?  Usually they go into
/usr/local/share/xastir/maps/, and any subdirectories you wish to
put below there.  The directory structure below that point is
free-form, so you can organize your maps in any method that makes
sense to you.

After you get some maps there, make sure the directories can be read
and changed into by a normal user, and that the map files you put
there are also readable by a normal user, then you can reindex your
maps from within Xastir.  After Xastir indexes them you can bring up
the Map Chooser and you should see some maps.  That's of course
assuming that you've compiled the proper map libraries into Xastir
for the types of maps you wish to use.

With no extra library support Xastir has support for WinAPRS,
APRSdos, PocketAPRS, and USGS GNIS maps.  You might try one of those
types first.
