[Xastir] newb alert

OK, I'm pretty new to linux and Xastir, so bear with
me.  I am reading the FMs, I just need some help
figuring out what I'm reading.

Debian apt-get install didn't work, so I downloaded
the source and compiled it.  Xastir loads and runs
fine, except I don't get any maps.  I've read the
stuff about setting zoom levels and layers.  But
nothing seems to come up.  I can select a map from the
Map Chooser, hit apply, it says "loading maps...." and
then nothing, just a grey grid.

Thanks for any help you might have.
