I think I switched from Redhat to SuSE around SuSE 5.3 or so.
Updates have been getting more reliable over the years as you might
expect. Of the three installs of SuSE 10.0 I have now, two started
as 9.0 or 9.1 full installs and were upgraded. The third was a 10.0
full install on a Dell Latitude CPx laptop. I had trouble with the
laptop install due to a bug on the 10.0 first CD but I managed to
work around it. The two upgrades on desktop machines were
relatively painless. I haven't tried 10.1 yet but may wait now
until 10.2 comes out.

I seem to remember having trouble with some updates around the 5.x
through 7.x SuSE versions and having to do full installs instead.

I tend to run very generic (and usually very old) hardware. That
might be why most of my updates have been painless.
