You're post were very interesting reading, and surprising too.

Having spent a lot of time playing with Ubuntu this year, I'm familiar 
with some of its issues.

One of those issues is upgrading Ubuntu. Some of the Ubuntu power users 
have given up on the upgrade path, preferring to backup, do a clean 
install, and then restore. So it was good to hear you didn't have any 
trouble with the upgrade.
