[Xastir] Debian Xlib error

My newly installed Debian is giving the error:

	Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
	Xlib: No protocol specified

...for xastir and also for gv.

I suspect that the X11 interface just isn't there - I think kdm branched off
a bit ago. Anyone got a clue for me?
