[Xastir] GNIS Data Problem

I have my state GNIS file installed in the GNIS directory.  But when I
select it in Map Chooser I get exactly nothing.  I downloaded the file
from the usgs.gov site and renamed the file to SC.gnis, etc.   I was
told that I should see a dot for each of the towns in the state.  I have
pretty much all of the libraries installed except gdal (it errors out
during the build) using the get-maptools.sh script.  What am I overlooking?
