no, just put the GPS on that port and configure a GPS interface for  
xastir.  xastir doesn't magically find a GPS just like it doesn't  
magically find a TNC - you've got to set it up.

AFAIK the only reason to use GPSd is so you can share the GPS among  
multiple applications.
