Try kicking down your serial speed on both the radio and the computer.  You
also might want to make sure that all available serial wires are connected
not just the two data and the ground.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, this is with the PC's built in 
serial port. I do have two USB to Serial adapters; I'll give them a try,
