You can absolutely do that. There is nothing preventing it. It is encouraged.
If you are using the CVS version of Xastir (instead of a release tarball) and
you screw up a file beyond your ability to fix it, you can just remove that
file and type "cvs update" and the unmolested version will return.

You shouldn't have to reload any driver, as that is very, very unlikely
to be the cause --- odds are good it's just a configuration mess-up. Can you
think of any event that triggered the problem (like installing some new
package, or monkeying with a set-up utility)?

As for recovering a set-up that works from the Live CD, I can't help you there.
I don't think the "repair" function on the Alternate Install CD can be used
for that. You definitely don't want to take the Windows approach of
reinstalling the system to fix that issue, and I think that's close to what
the "repair" feature does.

I'm at a loss for what kind of configuration mess-up might cause that kind
of problem, but you might find some hints in the "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" file.
It's possible that X is confused as to what kinds of modes are available.
You might want to post to a Kubuntu forum to get more help on that.
